Throwback Thursday: Cardiff celebrates as Welshman secures victory

The 2015 P1 AquaX UK championship took another twist as local favourite Richard Rowe secured victory at Cardiff Bay to take the lead in the 250 class overall standings.

Rowe’s victory came at the expense of a disappointed Adrian Wilson , who suffered a mechanical problem in the first race and failed to finish any of the remaining heats. The news would have been gutting to the latter, who had to watch as his place at the of the championships taken from him.

Despite rival Damien Evans taking the first race, Rowe followed up his initial second with two superb performances to land maximum points, securing an overall total of 57 which would be enough for the weekend win.

Yamaha rider Evans fought tooth and nail until the bitter end and finished just three points behind Rowe. Behind the action between the front two there was a memorable performance from Irishman Nial Grannell, who negotiated the course brilliantly throughout the weekend to land his first ever podium finish of the series. Grannell was also awarded the Cardiff Rookie Cup on the back of his showing.

After Rowe’s victory, his newly established lead at the top of the championship standings (183) would stand at 10 points from Wilson (173) going into the final round in Bournemouth, with Evans sitting pretty between the two on 179 also in contention.
