All roads will lead to North Wales next week for the country’s leading jet ski riders as Colwyn Bay prepares to host a P1 AquaX event for the first time. The two-day event (June 8-9) will kick off the national series which will see more than 30 racers competing in England and Wales across the summer to become the P1 AquaX UK champion.
P1’s extensive 2019 race calendar, which sees the international marine motorsport promoter staging more than 20 events on three continents through to November, includes some of Britain’s leading jet ski riders competing twice in Wales with Porthcawl staging the UK season finale.
Lisa Barsby, Global Head of P1 AquaX and herself a former world champion jet skier, explained: “We launched P1 AquaX here in the UK in 2011 and have now established successful race series in the United States and mainland Europe as well. Partnerships are at the heart of our business and we have enjoyed working with the local community in Colwyn Bay to progress plans for our very first visit to North Wales. We are aware that visitors have been enjoying the area since the Victorian era and we hope that our high-speed AquaX racing will attract both residents and tourists to the transformed seafront.”
The country’s top professional and amateur jet ski racers will be on show at the free-to-watch event at Porth Eirias that will serve up two days of fast and furious sprint and endurance racing. Councillor Louise Emery, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “We’re thrilled to have the P1 AquaX UK series in Conwy County, reinforcing once again that we have the right environment for great events. To be part of the fast-growing and exciting personal watercraft championships highlights commitments and developments within our 2018-2022 Events Strategy. We’re delighted to be working with P1 and welcome the media coverage that the event will generate.”
Supporting the race weekend will be Colwyn Bay Watersports, a community interest company founded in 2012 to realise the potential of the superb new facilities at Porth Eirias, and its director Taffy Osborne commented: “We can’t wait to be involved with this exciting event, along with our friends in Colwyn Jetski Club and at Porth Eirias. The racing will look great from the beach, the promenade or on the water, and national events like this help to put the town on the map.”
Also very much involved with the event will be Colwyn Jet Ski Club, which was formed in 1996 by a group of enthusiastic jet skiers. “We are all excited to welcome P1 AquaX to North Wales” said Club Secretary Roger Wakefield. “Two of our members – Derek Turner and Lucy Barrow – will be competing in the Sprint class and they are sure to get lots of local support.”
Racing will start at midday on both days (Saturday 8 June and Sunday 9 June) and details can be found on the P1 AquaX website: p1aquax.com
